Accessibility Is More Than You Think

It’s more than ramps, elevators, and parking spaces — it’s about equal access to jobs, housing, education, health care, and community life.

Alberta is one of the last provinces without Accessibility Legislation. Every day without it means people are excluded from opportunities others take for granted.

Barrier-Free Alberta (BFA) is a grassroots movement demanding strong, effective legislation to ensure every Albertan can live, work, and belong — without barriers.

Accessibility isn’t just about ramps and doors — it’s about creating communities where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive.

Barrier Free Alberta’s “Accessibility Is More Than You Think” campaign highlights the many ways accessibility impacts daily life and the supports needed for individuals in the disability community.

The campaign is built around 10 pillars that guide advocacy, education, and community change

The Alberta Ability Network gratefully acknowledges that what we call Alberta, is the traditional and ancestral territories and gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to influence our vibrant communities. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation, and gratitude to the many First Nations, Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta, and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations.
